Geospatial Information Science (GIS) and Natural Resources Management

The application of geospatial sciences natural resource management has spread very fast in the last decade. CORDIO East Africa developed a GIS unit that seeks to realise the use of mapping and mapping tools to answering coastal and marine resource management questions in Eastern Africa. The GIS and Remote sensing resource is applied across various projects locally and regionally. Currently, the GIS unit has over 20 licenced and freeware coastal and marine GIS software including ESRI ArcInfo 10, IDRISI Kilimanjaro and SAGA GUI. Among internal and external projects' components the unit is supporting include:

1. Participatory mapping of coastal and marine resources along Kenya coast
2. Spatial analysis and mapping of coral reef resilience in the Western Indian Ocean
3. Spatial analysis of coral bleaching in the Western Indian Ocean
4. Spatial analysis and mapping of fish spawning aggregations in south coast Kenya
5. Spatial analysis of migrant fishers resource use patterns in Kenya
6. Environmental sensitive area mapping coordinated by Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute and Kenya Maritime Authority
7. Kenya Coastal and Marine National Atlas under the African Marine Atlases of the UNESCO/IODE/ODINAFRICA network
