Education and capacity building

Benefitting greatly from CORDIO’s background in research; education and capacity building programme activities are geared to help address key issues in coastal communities and target the broad areas of awareness and practice.

Research programmes assess the state of the environment providing useful information for development of awareness material, facts to aid in policy making and evaluative feedback on past and present education programme activities. On-going activities in this area include:

  • CORDIO’s core research activities
  • Opportunities for staff and graduate students’ thesis work e.g. Migrants fishers project, Climate adaptation project
  • Assessment of students awareness of the marine environment
  • Short tailor made courses building technical capacity

Awareness programme activities target schools and communities in order to increase their knowledge and understanding of both local and regional issues as well as short and long term effects. These include:

  • Development of awareness materials such as information on different marine resources, different participatory tools and e-learning material for literacy, numeracy and environment
  • School based activities such as in-situ waste managing projects, school beautification, tree planting activities as well as guided excursions and exchange visits
  • Club patrons teacher training program in environmental education and school administrators training in environmental leadership
  • Community dissemination meetings relaying findings from research
  • Support and linkages on alternative livelihood activities for community groups

Practice programme activities serve to provide facts, develop skills and expertise for practical matters. These include:

  • Empowerment of community groups through the use of information and training opportunities for local resource management
  • Sharing research findings with relevant government departments for consideration in policy making
  • Running an undergraduate and postgraduate internship programme in CORDIO’s key  programme areas
